Having studied at London’s Royal Academy of Music (piano and composition) and performed and recorded as a member of the techno pop band Home Service, David Motion went on to establish a highly successful career as a recording engineer and record producer. Between 1984 and 1991 he produced singles and albums for such artists as Strawberry Switchblade (including the UK number 5 hit Since Yesterday), Red Box (including the UK number 3 hit Lean on Me), Carmel, Black, Win and Tom Robinson. He also produced the Japanese artists Chara, Toshihiko Takamizawa and Mimori Yusa.
For the last ten years David has concentrated on composing music for picture. He composed the score for Sally Potter’s highly acclaimed feature Orlando, earning glowing praise from The Hollywood Reporter: “Visually and aurally ‘Orlando’ is jaw-dropping, a tour-de-force...the robustly delicate music score is a scrumptious delight, one of the best film soundtracks in recent memory”.
David is one of Britain’s most successful composers for commercial advertising. In over fifty commercials produced and recorded in his own Soho studio he has created music for many worldwide campaigns by major corporations, including BMW, Audi, Vauxhall, Ford, Volkswagen, BUPA, Tesco, Nescafe, Johnnie Walker, Shell/Ferrari and HSBC. Recent advertising credits include the delightful cello & piano theme for Orange’s “Hand” commercial, screened nationally on television and in cinemas in 2001 and 2002, and a re-mix of Sonny & Cher’s The Beat Goes On for Ford in 2003.
In 2000 David collaborated with world-famous percussion virtuoso Evelyn Glennie on her album for BMG, Shadow Behind the Iron Sun. This acclaimed album, produced by rock music producer Michael Brauer, comprises an astonishing series of percussion improvisations by Evelyn, for which David provided textural accompaniments and contexts. The rich beauty of some of the tracks on this album has resulted in their being licensed, already by 2003, for a plethora of films and television productions.
